19th Hole Beverage Put To Good Use

2008 League Highlight Story

August 6, 2008 - Stow, Massachusetts (AP) - Butternut Farm Golf Club's most gracious bartender had Denis Garcia's favorite beverage already prepared and awaiting his triumphant arrival at the 19th Hole. Unfortunately, local news media outlets had failed to report Mr. Garcia being unavailable for Wednesday Golf League competition and otherwise attending to more pressing issues. Mr. Garcia's fellow golf league members, in an effort to avoid wasting a perfectly good liquid concoction, decided to utilize the thirst-quenching and picturesque mixture in a most appropriate manner (see photo). Mr. Garcia was unavailable for comment as we reached our reporting deadline.

Congratulations

Rusty Lorenzen and Mike Zurawski won our 18-hole 2008 League Championship on September 10 with a 42-30 victory over Henry Doherty and Tony Carpenito.  The match was played in excellent weather conditions (sunny and in the mid-60s) on a course that was unfortunately being overly-watered to the point that the golfers had to deal with active sprinkler heads and messy ground conditions including puddles on greens.  The winners led through most of the match from the 5th hole on and clinched the championship on the 16th green.

Congratulations

Brian Holub and Rusty Lorenzen won our Two-Man Blind Draw Net Medal event on September 10, 2008, with a combined net score of 9-under-par.  Brian Keith took second place with a "doubled-up" 8-under-par finish while Tony Carpenito and Mike Hume earned third place with a combined 5-under-par result.

Congratulations

Henry Doherty eagled the par-4 15th hole on June 18, 2008!  His 15-foot chip-in from the fringe followed an awesome 300-plus-yard tee shot.  This was Henry's second eagle of the season.   He also eagled the par-5 9th hole on April 30.  The highlight of this earlier effort was his tee shot striking a tree on the left side of the hole, avoiding a watery grave, and ultimately landing in the center of the fairway.  His 200-plus yard approach shot settled pin-high about ten feet to the right of the flagstick.

Two teams tied for first place in our league two-man scramble on July 2, 2008.  Mike Zurawski and Rusty Lorenzen as well as Mike Flynn and Denis Garcia survived torrential downpours and lightning to come in at one over par.  With a 92-percent near-capacity attendance for the round, our league maintained its decades-long streak of golfing in any and all kinds of weather, once again enduring the most challenging of conditions which included spontaneous fairway rivers, sandtrap ponds and flooded greens.
